Industry: Building Engineering

Niss designs HVAC and plumbing systems for buildings through his company, Delta-T Designs, as well as provides education at George Brown College and HRAI in the same subjects. He’s passionate about sustainable design; providing holistic and purpose built designs for the northern and remote communities. He loves to learn and travel which makes for great overlap with his work!

Fun Fact: “I’ve touched all three of the oceans that make up Canada’s coastline (Atlantic, Arctic & Pacific).”

What is special about your business?

“Delta-T Designs’ goal is to be able to provide sustainable designs for northern and First Nations communities to help provide a healthy environment that respects the cultures and lifestyles of the building occupants. I think what sets my business apart is my commitment to ongoing learning, continuous improvement as well as my curiosity. Because of this I have been able to take on interesting new projects and really increase my knowledge base.”

Can you share any exciting projects or initiatives your business is currently working on?

“For the past two years I’ve been studying Arctic and remote community design where I’ve taken courses in Arctic Engineering as well as Norther Building Design at the University of Alaska. Additionally, I and have been to Alaska for Cold Climate Conferences, and the North West Territories to learn about Dene and Inuvialuit culture; working to understand the differences in infrastructure, energy climate from southern communities to better position myself to deliver informed and sustainable design solutions for these communities. My learning and travelling has recently taken me to the hamlet of Tuktayaktuk, NT on the Arctic Ocean!”
